For over 125 years, Lynam Insurance has offered insurance services to residents, businesses, and organizations on Mount Desert Island and in Hancock County, Maine. Based in downtown Bar Harbor on beautiful Mount Desert Island, we offer insurance coverage for commercial, personal, marine, vehicles, and more.

Lynam Insurance is close-knit staff of seven, working with local residents and businesses to find the right coverage for the right price. Mount Desert Island and Maine's coastal regions maintain a rich tradition of permanent residents and those who vacation or live here seasonally. Lynam Insurance honors that tradition by catering to the needs of the communities in which we live. Living and working in the communities we serve gives us a better understanding of the needs of our customers.

History

In the mid 1870s, Fred C. Lynam arrived in Bar Harbor, and set about building a life for himself. He built and managed the Lynam Motel, married, and started a family. As the community of Bar Harbor grew, Mr. Lynam explored other entrepreneurial ventures. He saw the need to provide protection for people's property and wealth. In 1884, Lynam became a partner of the newly established Grant/Lynam Company, which provided insurance and real estate services to the growing community. The Grant/Lynam Company eventually became the Fred C. Lynam Company.

The company primary focus was on the real estate and rental business, catering to the growing summer visitor population. The Second World War increased the public's awareness of the need to financially protect their property, and the insurance part of the company began to grow.

Fred C. Lynam died in April of 1942. More than just a successful businessman, Lynam also gave a great deal to his community. The lists of organizations he helped serve include the Jesup Memorial Library, the Red Cross, Mount Desert Island Hospital, Bar Harbor Water Company, the Village Improvement Association, and the Bar Harbor Masonic Lodge. His estate continues to help many of these organizations and provides dozens of scholarships to area students every year.

This same spirit of professionalism and dedication to clients and the community continues today. Employees of the agency volunteer and serve the community in many ways, through School Boards, churches, the local Rotary Club, the Red Cross, and the Jesup Memorial Library. The philosophy of working and living in a community culminates into an organization with a rich history and a deep interest in the people they serve.

The Lynam Agency still does business on Main Street in Bar Harbor. The real estate and insurance companies are now separate entities, but still work cooperatively and complimentarily in the same building.
